The Medical
April 30, 2016
The entrance exams are over and you have been successful the next stage of the hiring process is the medical. At this stage you should have received a conditional offer of employment. There’s nothing unusual in that as many businesses and organizations require new employees to undergo a medical.
The medical is performed by a qualified physician or practitioner to ensure that a candidate is able to perform the duties of police officer. As part of the process the physician will investigate the medical history of the candidate before the physical examination begins. There will also be a series of clinical tests. These usually consist of the following:
1. Urinalysis
2. Tuberculosis if indicated from the findings of the history and/or physical examination.
3. Electrocardiogram (ECG) (Resting)
4. Drug Screening (Amphetamines, barbiturates, cocaine, methadone, opiates, propoxyphene, methaqualone, benzodiazepines, phencyclidine, and tetra hydo cannabinoids).
5. Chest X-Ray examination, if indicated from the findings of the history and/or physical examination
Assuming all is well the physician will give the all clear stating that in their opinion, the candidate is fit to perform the duties of a police officer. Based on the physician’s recommendation, the police agency can decide whether or not to revoke the conditional offer of employment. I wish you good health and a successful examination.
