Why You Should Join the NYPD

March 30, 2011

I have a couple o friends interested in joining the police but are just a bit hesitant. They live in New York and given the traumas of 2001 may be are justified in their concern. So if you are like them and wondering whether you should apply to join the police, let me offer a few facts about the New York Police Department.

History
The NYPD was established in 1844 and was closely modelled on the Metropolitan Police in London. At that initial stage the force was to consist of 1,200 officers serving a population of 320,000. New units were established over the years including the Bomb Squad in 1905, Motorcycle Squad in 1911, the Automobile Squad in 1919 and the Aviation Unit in 1929. Sadly 23 NYPD officers were killed when the World Trade Center collapsed on 11th September 2001.
Salary

As of 2010 the starting salary of new recruits is approximately $42,000. The top pay for police officers is $76,000.
Ranks

The ranks of the NYPD are:
Chief of Department
Bureau Chief
Assistant Chief
Deputy Chief
Inspector
Deputy Inspector
Captain
Lieutenant
Sergeant
Detective-Investigator
Detective Specialist
Police Officer

Prior to being employed by the NYPD, candidates have to take the Police Officer Entrance Exam. Amongst the subjects tested in the exam, candidates have to answer questions on written comprehension, written expression, memory recollection, spatial orientation, inductive reasoning and information ordering amongst other things. Test questions can be found on the Police Prof website.

I have no hesitation in recommending the police force to my friends and anyone else. Of course working conditions vary from city to city, state to state. I gather things are getting better in New York and it is a great city to be able to make a big difference. Certainly under Mayor Giuliani the crime rate dropped significantly. So my advice is, go for it.
