Overcoming Fear

February 1, 2017

Anyone tells you that they fear nothing is in my humble opinion lying. Otherwise they are not human beings. My friend Jerry was quite surprised at my response when he asked me if I ever get scared when I’m working. I said: “Sure I do. I face fear all the time as a police officer. It’s something I have to deal with.” Why was he surprised? Well I guess like many people, Jerry felt police officers deal with all sorts of nasty situations all the time and get used to it.

In some respects this is right. You get used to some stuff. Thankfully no one has yet pulled a gun on me, but that would scare the hell out of me. I have attended the scene of a crime where you are never sure if the house is empty, but the assailant might just still be there. You don’t know. If he is does he have a weapon? That’s the fear of the unknown.

The important lesson I have learned over the years is how to deal with that fear. Yes you are scared but the job still needs doing so you have to overcome the fear. Easier said than done for sure, but I know that training and experience helps. However, you have to focus on dealing with the problem and not dwell on the danger or the chance of failure.

Jerry confessed to his admiration for what we do but declined my offer of getting him an application to join us. He prefers life in an office worrying about profit and loss. I guess we all have different levels of fear in our jobs.
